The workshop will bring together scholars who are working on the history of business and commercial practices, legal and administrative institutions, and economic thought in nineteenth- and twentieth-century China. It takes as its subject the market, and is concerned with how the concept of the market was conceived and developed over time, from the late-imperial to the post-revolutionary periods. It will be concerned with interactions across both spatial and social boundaries, and, in particular, with the impact of Chinese economic thought and practices at home and abroad. It proceeds on two premises. First, that there is methodologically innovative and empirically rich work being done on the economic history of modern China that can be collectively brought to bear on the question of the market. Second, that this is a good time for agenda-setting conversations to take place between scholars from both sides of the Pacific regarding economic history and the history of economic thought in China.
