INTRODUCTION

 

The visualization of social networks in Angoulême shows relationships of family, friendship, employment and proximity (living nearby.) The relationship of being neighbours is depicted, in a general way, in the graph of parish geographies. But the remarkable archival sources in the Archives Municipales d’Angoulême also make it possible to map spatial relationships in much greater detail, at the level of “islands” or clusters of houses, and even of who lived next to whom. Here, we present archival material – both old and new – related to a single “island” in central Angoulême, the Isle de la Cloche Verte. The island was the home to eighteen of the eighty-three signatories of the marriage contract described in A Marriage Contract in Angoulême.
